Gymnosperms
Habitat:
Hot Regions, but really almost anywhere on Earth depending on the type of species.
Milestones:
Seeds, tissues, and eukaryotic cells.
Anatomical Features:
-Central vacuole shows wilting with low turgor pressure
-Chloroplasts to do photosynthesis
-Cellulose cell walls
Eating and Fleeting:
Autotrophic; gain energy through photosynthesis. This causes them to be at the bottom of the food chain.
Symmetry:
Radial, bilateral
Mobility:
Only moves as a seed, and then once growing it becomes immobilefor life.
Reproduction:
Male and female reproductive organs are in the form of cones. When fertilized, the ovule develops inside of the cone. This only happens in one generation due to alternation of generations. In the other generation, the plant will undergo meiosis to produce gametes.
Development:
After fertilization and initial growth, they will go through secondary growth. In this grow the tree, it will grow secondary xylem and phloem. The growth of secondary xylem causes the rings inside of trees. Other development depends on generation.
Examples:
-Encephalartos sclavoi
-Macrozamia cardiacensis
-Lepidozamia hopei
Other Information:
In the seed, the remains of the female gametophyte serves as additional nutrients.
